Conservationists have hailed the extension of protection of the Gardens of Stone, a region of dramatic rock formations and rare wildlife in the Blue Mountains that has long been threatened by coalmines. The New South Wales government is set to announce on Saturday a $50m plan to transfer about 31,500ha of state forest and other crown land west of Sydney into a state conservation area.

The Colong Foundation wishes to thank the many volunteers who worked to protect the Gardens of Stone for over thirty years. The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has boosted its support over the last year and the recent arrival of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute is welcome to strengthen our research capabilities as reserve management becomes established. The following is not a complete list, nor it does not include all members of the Gardens of Stone Alliance, it is a short list of Gardens of Stone champions who are also members of the Colong Foundation.

Over 30,000 hectares of NSW state forests will be transferred to the national parks estate, including the iconic Gardens of Stone, creating a new eco-tourism and adventure destination on the edge of the Blue Mountains near Lithgow. The centrepiece of the investment will be the Lost City Adventure Experience, an iconic project, that will include Australia’s longest zipline and a spectacular elevated canyon walk. It will also feature NSW’s first Via Ferrata rock-climbing opportunity, a protected climbing route employing steel cables, rungs or ladders, fixed to the rock that climbers can safely attach to. Premier Dominic Perrottet said the NSW Government was investing $50 million to transform the area into an eco-tourism and eco-adventure destination generating jobs and economic growth for the entire region.
